Local Context
The Ecotropical Center is located in the municipality of Palmas in the state of Tocantins, Brazil. The center was founded in 2007 in partnership with: Energias Institute, Aveiro University, Secretariat of Science and Technology, University Foundation of Tocantins, Ibama, Naturatins, Secretariat of Natural Resources and the Envionment, Celtins, Investco and Eletronorte.
Project Description
The Tropical Biodiversity Knowledge Center offers to the public a framework for field data collection, field classes, meetings, workshops and scientific tourism, among other purposes. Its structure includes: computer lab with 10 computers, with internet access; library; taxonomy lab for plants and animal studies; base camp; two dormitories with bathrooms and room to sleep 16 students; two dormitories with bathrooms and room to sleep 4 trainers; restaurant; kitchen; auditorium; and laundry room.
The project aims to implement a knowledge centre focusing on the development of research, training and qualification; to establish a library and documentation centre that concentrates on information generated in the region; to promote exchange and interaction between local, national and international researchers and civil society; to develop activities that enhance biodiversity conservation and to maximize the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation programs through the interaction of scientific results, with sustainable development policies among others.
