Sustainable gardens using solar energy in Tocantins

January 15, 2009

The Ecologica Institute (EI), in partnership with HSBC, held today the ceremony for a Sustainable Community Horta Bom Jesus, located in the Chapada de Areia-TO. The initiative was organized by the Garden Project with Sustainable Use of Solar Energy for Irrigation, developed by IE in Tocantins through the sponsorship of HSBC.

The goal of this project is to implement sustainable models of gardens to promote access to renewable energy to provide environmental conservation and improvement of quality of life of communities, and contribute to reducing the effect of climate change.

The project uses solar energy (solar panels) to move the irrigation system of the garden. In Tocantins, the project works in three main areas: implementation of sustainable gardens with the use of renewable energy sources, aiming to reduce the effects of climate change, awareness and community empowerment; and alternative management of vegetable crops.

Project partners include: the Institute for Sustainable Rural Development of Tocantins (Ruraltins), Federal Technical School (ETF-TO), Eletronorte and the State Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seagro-TO).
